BEHIND THE PRETTY PICTURE
Teen girls dilemma in the cosmetic world
There is so much confusion and misguided information for teen girls using make-up that it is hard for teens to make the right choices for themselves on what is most attractive. With rising awareness of body image and appearance at this age, it is wise to help educate teens so they feel confident and like themselves and their appearance to release some of this pressure and confusion. Today there is an intense variety of teen magazines and celebrity magazines. They go to the make-up counters at department stores. (Most of the sales girls have never had training in cosmetics). They try to capture the looks of their favorite celebs while watching their favorite TV shows. Teens start experimenting with cosmetics while never having a lesson or proper guidance. When they go to apply make-up for the first time some may use too much eyeliner, or apply too much eye shadow. The number one dilemma is foundation color. It is hard for a teen to understand what skin tone color is and what colors look best on them. To top it off some teens never wash their make-up off their skin, and that can cause breakouts and rashes if not properly cleansed.
Many mothers of teen girls come in to me complaining that their daughters are wearing too much make-up and they are having problems with breakouts from improper use of cosmetics. On the flip side I have mothers urging their daughters to wear make-up but they do not know how to wear it, how to apply it or what looks good on them.
Lessons to be learned
Heather and her mother Jackie came in to our studio to have a teen make-up lesson. Jackie was concerned that Heather was wearing too much black eyeliner and wearing the wrong foundation color, she was worried it was clogging her skin and it was breaking her out. Heather began tweezing her eyebrows trying to copy models in the magazines looking for a trendy updated look, but the shape was not attractive for her face shape. We began instruction to help Heather achieve that trendy look she wanted using proper colors that would be the best age appropriate style for her.
I first analyzed her face shape and expertly shaped her eyebrows into a beautiful trendy style that was right for her. She was breaking out so we went through a very easy cleansing routine to help calm and reduce irritation. I also informed Heather that the use of cream foundations are too thick and clog the pores and that it was one of the main reasons for her breakouts. She also used mineral powder make-up, which is too thick and has very little coverage. I instructed her to use a lightweight custom foundation because it will allow her to receive a color that will match her skin tones perfectly and will not break her out. To set the foundation I applied a fine mica-powder from Fleur Visage with good coverage so that skin can breathe and will not clog pores. I applied 2 eye colors and a soft eyeliner to bring out her already gorgeous big eyes and showed her the technique of everyday make-up. With the right blush color and gloss she was on her way to confidence. She was so ecstatic at the results. She finally got her trendy look without looking overly made-up and learned what colors were best for her. Now Heather will walk away with good habits that will last her a lifetime.
