SCRUBILIOUS SCRUBS!
Exfoliating the skin should be part of your everyday skincare routine
I was watching Larry King Live a couple of weeks ago on CNN. He had a panel of beauty experts discussing the latest break through technologies in health and beauty. Listeners were to call in and ask the panel questions about anything related to beauty and health. To my surprise the very first question asked was “Does scrubs and exfoliants really work against anti-aging and if so, why?’ Dr. Pericone a renowned plastic surgeon and anti-aging skin care expert commented and said, that exfoliants not only cleanse and resurface the skin but it is one of the most important steps in skin care that women can do to help fight against wrinkles and aging skin. According to Dr. Perricone you must exfoliate every day to help take off the first layer of skin so your moisturizers can penetrate deeper into the skin.
Dry Flaky Skin
A lot of women think that using scrubs will dry out their skin, I hear this all the time and I wonder where they are getting their information. If you have dry skin, dullness or fine lines you must exfoliate your skin, because a scrub will help take off that dry flaky layer and it allows your moisturizer to topically insure deeper penetration. I don’t care if you are using the most expensive creams in the world it will not penetrate without a good aggressive scrub! Exfoliation also is beneficial in making the skin brighter, smoother and restores a beautiful texture.
*News* for Deeper Exfoliation
Glycolic acids or Alpha Hydoxy acids aid in a deeper exfoliation taking off two to three layers of the skin. The percentage has to be 8% or more, anything less you will not yield the benefits. Glycolic acid has been available for over 15 years and is one of the best exfoliant to smooth out wrinkles and help retexturize the skin in a non-aggressive gentle manner. I always advise my clients to use Glycolic acid for 2 months and then 2 months off. You need to break down the top layer for two cycles then you need to let the skin heal and restore. The results are remarkable, the skin appears less lined it looks smoother and more youthful.
Retinal, Retin A’s and Obage peels exfoliate even deeper, but beware, if you exfoliate the skin to much it will thin out the skin and the protective barrier and may result in older looking skin. I do not recommend these harsh abrasives unless you have very rough, dry, sun damaged thick skin.
At The Rouge our professional skin care experts can help you select the right exfoliants for your special skin type. We carry over 10 different exfoliants and offer home use glycolic acid creams, serums and our special Omega Peels. I always recommend my clients to scrub every morning in the shower. The warm steam helps the exfoliants work better and more aggressive to shed that dry layer. Since dry skin “eats up” foundation, your foundation will look smoother more youthful and your skin looking hydrated for your day.
